Iran's reformist presidential candidate Masoud Pezeshkian won Iran’s presidential election with 16.3m ballots, defeating his conservative opponent Saeed Jalili, who received 13.5m ballots in second round of presidential elections.

The runoff was triggered after no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes on June 28. In the first round Pezeshkian led with 10.4 million - or around 42 percent - with Jalili close behind on 9.4 million - 39 percent - of the 24.5 million votes cast.

The election was held a year ahead of schedule after former president Ebrahim Raisi, foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six others were killed in a helicopter crash on May 19 in the country's northwestern mountains.
