⚠️ Nitin Gadkari is wrong about Ethanol blending ⚠️
⛽️ Ethanol’s low energy density is a major concern. But, the source of ethanol is also a matter of concern for India. Ethanol is produced in crops like corn and sugarcane. India has already crossed the 15% mark in ethanol blending with petrol. And soon we will reach the target of 20%.
🌽 To reach the 20% blending target, we will need around 1000 crore litres of ethanol. And to produce this large amount of ethanol, around 2.5 lakh tonnes of corn will be used which is around 70% of India’s total corn production. In 2023, India imported corn to meet the domestic requirements after many decades of being a corn exporter. And in the first 6 months of 2024, the corn export from India has already dropped by 87%.
💧 Sugarcane is one of the most water-intensive crops in the world. Under this with an example. 1 tonne of sugarcane can produce around 70 litres of ethanol which requires around 2800-2900 litres of water. In a country where the signs of water shortage are already visible, sugarcane is the crop that can deplete the groundwater more rapidly than estimated. Another study shows that to meet the 20% ethanol blending only with sugarcane, we will need to cultivate sugarcane in 10% of India’s total farming lands.
