EPISODE 8: HIS CLOTHING
In Matthew 9:20-22 a woman who was subject to bleeding for 12 years reached out and grasped the edge of Jesus' garment. Was it a coincidence that she reached for this part of Jesus' clothing? Or did she know something we don't know about His clothing?
In this episode, Jeff and Israel Tour Guide, “Danny the Digger” set out on a quest to learn about Jesus’ wardrobe - what did Jesus wear in the 1st Century? How was it significant?
Their quest takes them to Nazareth Village where they are once again transported back in time and observe a woman in 1st Century attire hard at work making clothing. As she dyes wool, spins it into thread and weaves it into a garment, Jeff learns about the processes used to make clothing and the types of clothing and colours available in the 1st Century.
Jeff's quest then takes him to the beautiful shores of the Mediterranean Coast where he meets up with Baruch Sterman of the Phil Tekhelet Association, author of "THE RAREST BLUE." As an expert chemist focused on how blue dye was created in the ancient world, Baruch demonstrates for Jeff the mysterious way the biblical blue dye was extracted and processed to create the blue dye mentioned in the Bible - an art that was lost for centuries and only recently rediscovered!
Jeff learns that in biblical prophecy and symbolism, the blue dye derived from a particular snail, known as the Murex snail, holds profound significance. This vivid blue pigment, often referred to as "tekhelet," carries spiritual and prophetic meaning deeply rooted in the Hebrew Bible. The color blue (specifically the shade produced from the Murex snail) was considered sacred and highly symbolic in the Old Testament. It is prominently mentioned in the Torah, where God instructed the Israelites to use a blue thread in their tzitzit, a fringed garment worn by Jewish men, as a reminder of their religious obligations. This blue thread served as a symbol of God's presence and His covenant with the people. Moreover, the use of blue dye in various Hebrew religious textiles and the high priest's vestments highlights its importance in the ritual and spiritual life of the Israelites. The deep blue hue was believed to connect the earthly realm with the divine, signifying a direct link between humanity and God.
Interviews with experts discuss clothing in 1st Century Judea. What would Jesus wear as a Jewish man in the 1st Century? What did the Bible have to say about clothing? Did Jesus wear a prayer shawl? What did the corner of his garment look like and why would the woman with the issue of blood have reached out for it? Just how precious was the colour blue in the ancient world? And why is this specific colour significant for Israel today?
