I've made it to the village of Wechiau which is engaged in a hippo conservation project in conjunction with the Calgary Zoo in Canada. To be honest, I was pretty unhappy with the experience. It was completely unorganized, the tourism infrastructure was a disaster, and there was little sign that Wechiau is actually doing anything for the hippos. Personally, I thought it looked like the Calgary Zoo was funding the project as a way to justify their own exhibits. There is a lot of money going to Wechiau, but I'm not really sure it's going where it needs to.
Despite my issues with Wechiau, I still had a decent time. I saw hippos and spent the night in a place called a hippo hide which is basically a tree fort above the river.
Tomorrow I start heading south in Ghana towards the city of Kumasi.
