The United States has broken with all other permanent members of the UN Security Council and declared sanctions targeting Iran are once again in force.
The US’s major allies - Britain, France and Germany - have already written to the UN to say sanctions relief will remain.
The sanctions relief had been detailed in the Iran nuclear deal, which Washington pulled out of two years ago.
The other signatories say the US no longer has the legal power to force through any changes.
