I often go to gigs solo, which typically shocks people who think I'm mad. Frequent questions I get asked;
- Don't you feel like a weirdo?
- How do you stay safe?
- Aren't you scared/nervous you'll get murdered/ drugged/ or worse
Well, I don't and here's why. I follow a few basic tips to staying safe and having fun at heavy metal gigs. Also, metal people are so lovely and welcoming (usually) that I end up meeting lots of interesting people, some of who have become great friends.
Now, in this video I rambled quite a bit, so here is a summary of my key points;
- Hydrate before the show & stay hydrated throughout
- Wear comfy shoes preferably with arch support
- Take mini sweets in your bag for some energy & to help hydrate your mouth
- Don't drink alcohol! Stick to water, juice, or an soft drink
- Take a sensible cheap bag that you don't mind getting wrecked
- Have a safety buddy on call. Let people know where you are going and when you'll be home. Ensure you have cash for a taxis & a way to get home safely - don't go wandering off dark alleyways!
I hope this helps and you get the confidence to just take the plunge and go do what you love. Life is too short to wait on other people's approval or schedule. Enjoy metal and you stay classy.
