“Om Ah Hung
“Homage and praise to the deity Vajrakilaya, Destroyer of Maras, whose unchanging body- immutable and steadfast- is free from aging and decay, and who appears in wrathful form to unite the activities of all the buddhas of the ten directions and three times as one!”
Dear Dharma friends, this verse summarizes the main benefits of Vajrakilaya practice. In short, the Four Maras are destroyed by the enlightened intent of the Four Kilas. All suffering of the six realms of Samsara is contained within the Four Maras.
“Mara” should be understood to mean suffering. Regarding the Four Maras, [it is said in the lineage supplication]: “Conquer the Mara of the Aggregates and free this body of fully matured karma as the deity!”
Lord Jigten Sumgon said: “What travels in samsara is the body.”
What happens when the Mara of the Aggregates is freed? A rainbow-like, pure illusory form is attained.
“Conquer the Mara of Afflictions and place the seal of bliss and emptiness!”
When all afflictions are transformed into primordial wisdom, when the six afflictions develop into the five types of primordial wisdom, the Mara of the Afflictions is conquered and the seal of bliss and emptiness is placed.” The afflictions will mature into primordial wisdom. In their immature state, the afflictions are the cause of suffering in Samsara. As they mature through the power of primordial wisdom, “the Mara of the Afflictions is conquered and the seal of bliss and emptiness is placed.”
Everyone experiences the suffering of death, no matter where they are born in the six realms. One who realizes the meaning of deathlessness: “Conquers the Mara of Death and gains the power of eternal life.” When one realizes the ultimate truth that the mind transcends birth and death, one conquers the Mara of Death and gains the power of immortal life.”
Worldly people who are bound by the fleeting pleasures of the higher realms, merely seek the happiness of gods and humans. This is not [sufficient].
“Conquering the Mara of the Gods, may I reach the spontaneously perfected ground!”
Having matured into a pure, unchanging illusory form, one discovers the profound bliss of the Dharmakaya. One attains the state of Vajradhara.
I always refer to the Four Maras as they are described in the lineage supplication. I briefly summarize the benefits here.
Among the Four Kilas, the “Purely Aware Kila of Primordial Wisdom”, is the most important.
The Four Kilas are:
“The Purely Aware Kila of Primordial Wisdom,
The Immeasurable Compassion Kila,
The Bodhichitta Kila, and
The Symbolic Material Kila.”
There are numerous commentaries on these Four Kilas, such as the Vajrakilaya Commentary in One Hundred Thousand Black Verses.
Those who follow these instructions will ultimately conquer the Four Maras. Once they have conquered the Four Maras, they will attain the true state of Buddhahood.
According to the Buddha’s teachings, Vajrakilaya- Vajra Youth- appears to embody all the three times buddhas’ enlightened activities, helping beings attain enlightenment swiftly.
However, to practice a Yidam Deity, one also needs to possess the lineage of practice and blessings.
Having practiced it since childhood, I impart it to my Dharma friends to introduce the nature of mind as best I can.
As a result, Dharma friends develop a feeling of practice.
It is essential to understand how to practice a deity, such as the sadhana ritual, the melodious chants, and so forth. If the method of accomplishment is not authentic, it is like serving rice without vegetables.
It is only when all aspects of Sadhana practice are complete, including melody, tune, and so on, that blessings will be received.
Guru Rinpoche said: “It is better to chant the mantra slowly in melody than to recite many mantras quickly.”
By doing so, a feeling of practice develops as a sign of progress.”
