Rahul Gandhi, who entered politics in 2004, was viewed as India's future leader-in-waiting because he was the son, grandson, and great-grandson of former prime ministers.
Twenty years later, the 53-year-old head of the opposition Congress party was about to experience his biggest victory to date: a defeat of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by about 140 seats.
Under any other set of political conditions, it would be considered an electoral humiliation, but in light of the BJP's resounding victories in 2014 and 2019, it represents a remarkable turnaround.
Under his leadership, the once-dominant Congress has wilted, and even before exit polls this past weekend indicated another crushing victory for the BJP, expectations were already low.
