Jackson 2bears, Kanien’kehà:ka artist and scholar and 2022-24 Ida Ely Rubin Artist in Residence at MIT, gave an artist lecture in MIT's Bartos Theater about his project Ne:Kahwistará:ken Kanónhsa’kówa í:se Onkwehonwe. This multimedia, communal installation is a collaborative creation of 2bears and 2RO MEDIA, developed in partnership with members of the Six Nations of the Grand River Community and produced at Thru The Red Door in Six Nations.
The artwork, which premiered at the 2RO MEDIA Festival in Ohsweken in October 2023, unfolds on a 34-foot panorama screen, utilizing multiple projectors to craft an immersive environment complemented by a 14.2 channel surround audio system and delves into a fictional re-telling of the Haudenosaunee Creation Story, offering a cyclical narrative that traverses the realms of the past, present, and future.
After the lecture, Jackson 2bears was joined by Nida Sinnokrot, Associate Professor in the Art, Culture and Technology program at MIT, and Nicole McGaa, undergraduate in the MIT AeroAstro Department and co-president of the Native American Student Association (NAIA) for a panel discussion moderated by Kat Cizek of the MIT Co-Creation Studio.
This event was part of the Art, Culture, and Technology (ACT) program lecture series and co-sponsored by MIT Native American and Indigenous Association (NAIA), MIT American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), Co-Creation Studio, and the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST).
Production and development for Ne:Kahwistará:ken Kanónhsa’kówa í:se Onkwehonwe was supported by MIT Co Creation Studio and CAST; additional project support was provided by the Canada Council for the Arts.
