NATIONAL FORENSIC SCIENCE WEEK
August 7th through 13th has been designated National Forensic Science Week! This national event recognizes forensic science professionals for their dedication and the importance of forensic science, in modern criminal justice. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has both sworn and civilian forensic professionals who perform a myriad of tasks, to ensure evidence used in the prosecution of crimes is collected and maintained with integrity.
The attached video highlights a few of our forensics professionals demonstrating some of their duties, including fingerprint comparison and lifting, and evidence collection from a mock crime scene.
The deputies assigned to our Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) Unit investigate all types of crimes scenes. They collect physical and biological evidence, and process physical evidence in a laboratory for latent prints. Our Forensic Identification Specialists identify complex latent prints that are developed from crime scenes and evidence. This unit also generates hand-drawn sketches of suspects or persons of interests, and examines digital medias, such as computers and cell phones for evidence.
Our forensic professionals undergo rigorous training, and are experts in the field that they work. Their work is instrumental to obtaining justice for victims of crime, and we are proud of their dedication to their job, and our community.
