The 3 Hammer Challenge was an idea that was created to get me back to the roots of this art form. Forget the tools and technology; can I make a handpan using just 3 hammers?
Last year I wanted to get back to the basics of making. This year I also want to get back to the basics of playing. I've pursued 9 notes, played mutants, added bottom notes and in doing so I wonder if I've wandered off the path. Do too many notes dilute the original intention of the instrument?
One evening I was feeling nostalgic for the good ol' days and I dug up some of my favorite videos. Most were people playing the heck out of 7 note instruments and having way more fun than I've been having lately. I felt both envious and inspired. I am going to use this year's 3HC to travel back in time to when things were simpler.
I made a 20", 7 note instrument. I compiled a list of some of my favorite 7 note scales in D and I let you, the viewer, vote on what scale I was going to make and this instrument will be ready to be given away on October 13th, the first International Handpan Day.
