AMERICAN ON MIR IS MAKING FRIENDS
Space natsot Duration: 1.07
A Philadelphia TV station conducted an Earth-to-Space interview with astronaut Norm Thagard, the American aboard the Russian MIR space station. Thagard said he and his two Russian counterparts were getting
along well. He explained the goal of his mission...to conduct experiments to determine how long humans can remain healthy in
space. The US space shuttle Atlantis is due to dock at Mir in June, the
first of seven flights over the next three years to the ageing
space station. In 1997, America, Japan, Europe, Canada and Russia are scheduled to begin constructing a new international space station.

SPACE Astronaut Norm Thagard, next to Russian cosmonaut in MIR space station compartment. Thagard SOT: "Well, I think it feels great. In fact we're friends. I mean, we've been working together now for about a year. We've known each other that long. We get along fine, that's not really a problem - this is a profession and really not a nationality so that makes it a lot easier. We all work for the same goals. We're doing the same sort of work and I think we're all enjoying it." Earth seen from the MIR. Thagard SOT: "Well, we need to learn whether or not humans
can stay up here for the time period necessary either to have permanent presence in an orbiting station as the MIR or even to make trips to Mars. I think with the Russian astronaut who was here when I came and had been in space since on the station for 14 months, he probably already has a pretty good idea that humans can do that sort of thing. Nonetheless there still are some answers we need by way of how much bone marrow is lost during Space flight, what sort of exercises are necessay to counteract the deconditioning that the heart sees and the muscles see, so we'll continue to study those things until we are satisfied that we can do this kind of thing."
