“It’s a great time to be a young black British artist’ - that’s according to Joy Labinjo. The artist is a second generation Nigerian who trained at Newcastle University. Now at the tender age of 24, she’s making a name for herself with her large scale paintings of contemporary family life. And her first major exhibition exploring the relationship between identity, race and culture, opens at the Baltic tomorrow as arts reporter Sharuna Sagar has been finding out.
