Portaferry is a picturesque tourist destination nestled on the shore of Strangford Lough in rural County Down.It is linked to Strangford by a short ferry journey of less than 10 minutes.
On this walk, we will explore how Portaferry's coastal location shaped it's development through the centuries. It has a long history of settlement going back thousands of years. I will share with you the economic and social history of the town and visit local buildings of architectural interest, for example, the Portico. The Portico is an arts and cultural centre with a dual function as a Presbyterian church. Hear amazing stories about several local people of note, for example, Rev Dr William Steel Dickson who was a United Irishman and involved in the 1798 Rebellion. There was an attack on the Market House during the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland and in the old graveyard I will show you the headstone of one of the United Irishmen who was killed in the attack. We will visit the Maritime Visitor's Centre where you can see an exhibition relating to the rich heritage of the local area. There is a Marine Science research centre linked to Queen's University in Portaferry and a number of innovative sustainable energy projects have been carried out in the lough.This is the location of pioneering 21st century research on sustainable energy and sustainable, commercial seaweed cultivation. The town also has an aquarium and seal sanctuary.
This walking tour is at an easy-going pace and suitable for people of all fitness level.
From Windmill Hill(optional extra) enjoy wonderful views over the town to Strangford Lough, Castle Ward National Trust estate including Games of Thrones filming locations, St Patrick’s Country and beyond.
