Repair of a canalicular obstruction usually involves a cut-down over the area of the obstruction with excision of the obstruction, followed by intubation of the lacrimal system with Crawford stents. I have found that placement of two stents seems to improve my surgical success. Patients usually tolerate the two stents well. I will remove one of the stents at 4 months, then remove the other 4 months after that (8 months post-op). Sometimes, I will leave one stent in long-term if they are doing well, or have failed a previous attempt at repair.
