Hope you're all ok. Earlier this year, I visited the wonderful Falls of Shin Salmon viewing platform, near Lairg in the Scottish Highlands, and also explored the local nature reserve which was just beautiful. The community visitor centre was closed at the time of my visit but has an excellent, restaurant, gift shop and exhibition. The Falls of Shin are just a fifteen-minute drive from Lairg up the Achany Glen and are a must-see in the area.
The Falls of Shin are one of the best places in the Scottish Highlands to see Atlantic Salmon leaping upstream to spawn. Sadly, I didn't see any on this occasion, but it is a wonderful thing to see when they're running. The best time to see Salmon tackling the falls is between May and September.
Aside from the amazing Salmon viewing platform, there are beautiful woodland trails (I took the yellow trail), a mini-golf course and a children's playground. The car park (free) is a good size, but it can get busy in peak season. After enjoying the woodland trail, I drove back along the River Shin to have a bite to eat at the Pier Cafe in Lairg, which is one of my favourite restaurants in the area.
