Many unresolved conflicts start or are kept in place because of an approach that does not acknowledge that mistakes are opportunities for learning rather than reasons for condemnation or blame. The focus will be more on 'who did it?' rather than 'how did it happen?' in a blame approach that does not acknowledge that it is ok to make mistakes. Where the focus is on treating all mistakes as opportunities for learning this is when growth through conflict can be supported.

As with many of the Principles they can, on reflection, seem 'obvious' but when we stop to consider our own practices and become more mindful of our own communication we will often come to recognise that we don't practise them and start to see how their absence has a negative impact on our relationships with others on both a personal level and a professional level.

Principle 1: That we treat each other with respect [ Ссылка ]

Principle 3: That we have the right to pass [ Ссылка ]

Principle 4: That we don't volunteer others. [ Ссылка ]

Principle 5: That we speak only for ourselves using I-statements [ Ссылка ]

Principle 6: That we speak but not too often or for too long [ Ссылка ]

Principle 7: That we challenge or explore the behaviour not the person [ Ссылка ]

These Principles are drawn from observations of participants in mediation and how they have effectively and creatively resolved conflict, and also how people have responded ineffectively to conflict such that it is initiated, maintained and even escalated.
