Charles Gounod premiered his motet 'Gallia' in one of the Royal Albert Hall's first concerts in 1871, a concert that was attended by Saint-Saëns. After hearing the work, Saint-Saëns composed his paraphrase, which very clearly shows influences from Liszt's paraphrases. The piece features many virtuosic textures that Liszt commonly used in his arrangements, such as tremolo chords, rapid scales and arpeggios between the notes of the melody, and a heavy use of octaves. The climactic finale, based on the 'Jerusalem' movement of the original work, attempts to recreate the full power of the chorus and orchestra on the piano.
