Back with another soundtrack for the intimidating horror spinoff to the "Ice Climber" series that began on the NES of 1985 and on the arcades on 1984, "Frozen Inferno," here is a piano-instrumented, truncated and upbeat remix of "Silent Hill 2 OST - Promise (Reprise)" for the terrific horror spinoff, titled "No Happiness." This variant has the music sped up.
For analysis of the soundtrack, "No Happiness," considering the symbolism behind the instruments used in songs in the original DDLC, it is quite interesting that this song only uses the piano, Monika's instrument. It fits too, since Monika is the only one left alive in "Frozen Inferno," but after witnessing Popo killing Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri, she felt heavily devastated and heartbroken of losing her beloved friends and fellow club members, enough to the point that she lose herself in her grief. Plus, the distorted warbling and faint glitching, along with the choir in the background, is also a nice touch of the soundtrack. This not only symbolizes that despair and suffering is inevitable, but also symbolizes the entire lore of Frozen Inferno and DDLC! - both games have no good ending, only consequences and brutal suffering is inevitable, even if there is any sign of confidence. More than that, this also symbolizes Popo's leitmotif: after Nana accidentally killed Popo by shoving him off a mountain during a race, Popo was seeking for unforgivable revenge on Nana, and he inevitably did, by trapping her into an infernal incarnation of the mountain where Popo's death partook in, but Nana was not his sole victim, however, as Popo had no qualms of killing Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri, Nana's friends, through semi-natural causes. For instance, Popo amplified Sayori's depression and Yuri's obsessiveness more than enough to drive them to suicide, with the former hanging herself and the latter stabbing herself, of course. Natsuki, on the other hand, got her neck twisted and her facial features erased under Popo's influence. As for Monika, well... let's just say, she went missing the day her friends, Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri, have met their unexpected demise. After that, Popo's enraged spirit conceals Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri into the infernal incarnation of the mountain where Popo's death partook in, like I said, along with trapping Nana. In the end, Popo traps Nana, Sayori, Yuri and Natsuki in the infernal mountain that goes on for an eternal loop, leaving just Monika to mope from the loss of her beloved friends and eventually losing her own life to her huge grief.
This song just gives you the feel of fear, at least when you first launch the mod... it scares you, as you look at the screen, the sketched out and monochromatic characters (but did you know that Popo has one glowing iris in his left eye? This symbolizes that he is not only the one that killed the 5 girls, Monika, Sayori, Natsuki, Yuri and Nana, but this also means that he is staring at your soul, signalizing that he is thirsting for more than enough revenge that if he suffers, Nana and his friends will suffer with him too), the dark atmospheric theme... but the theme remains calm, which only makes it bit more disturbing... like it is traditional.
However, at least, after playing Frozen Inferno and DDLC! (when I witness the haunting ghost screen), the song hit differently... like a funeral, or witnessing someone die (well, quite literally, in the mod, you witness 4 characters die in the end, all 5 of them end up getting terminated and one succumb to despair), you feel depressed, hurt. Because you failed to save them, you failed the fight and you failed to break the corruption of the game. It gives you the feeling of: "it's your fault, you did this, you were the one to look into a place where you shouldn't be, now suffer the consequences."
"There is no happiness. Only suffering and despair is inevitable."
