PCOS per se does not cause high prolactin levels. Actually, in PCOS the levels of androgen are very high. But occasionally in PCOS cases, say about 3 to 15 % of cases, high levels of prolactin were noted which was only transient and not of much significance. Hyperprolactinemia and PCOS, both are independent disorders and per se it does not cause high prolactin levels. Hyperprolactinemia causes irregular cycles. PCOS also causes irregular cycles. So when we investigate a case of PCOS, we have to rule out high prolactin levels as another entity. Otherwise both are independent disorders.
