In this video, we describe how the complement system is activated. We explain the role of the classical pathway, Mannan binding lectin (MBL) pathway, and the alternative pathway in the activation process. The formation of C3-convertase in each of these pathways has been explained. The common pathway that is initiated by C5b and goes all the way to the formation of the Membrane Attack Complex (MAC) has also been described.
This video further explains the effector functions of the complement system, the regulation of the complement system to avert possible autoimmunity, and finally, the disorders associated with lacking certain elements/proteins of the complement system.
