Just like you, many people wonder if mother dogs miss their puppies when they move on to their new homes.
You’re not alone in wondering this since no one wants to be cruel to their beloved dogs, and when it comes to the mother and puppy relationship, we’ll need to look at many factors.
Mother dogs form a strong bond with their puppies, and they can even recognize them 2 years after they’ve been separated. This tells us that a mother dog does have the potential to miss her puppies— regardless of her age, breed, or hormone levels.
For How Long Do Mother Dogs Miss Their Puppies?
To answer this question, we need to understand the chemistry behind mother and puppy bonding.
During pregnancy and at birth, a hormone called Oxytocin is released from the mother’s brain which greatly increases her maternal instincts.
The Oxytocin makes them fierce and overprotective when it comes to their puppies, hence the potential for aggression when someone approaches the pups in the wrong way.
In fact, Oxytocin is commonly known as the ‘love and jealousy’ hormone, and works the same way for humans as it does for dogs!
But the Oxytocin levels do fall over time, making the maternal instincts weaker as time goes by.
Another factor that affects the mother’s affection towards the puppies is the litter size. Studies suggest that the greater the litter size, the less attached she becomes to the puppies.
Although mother dogs of certain breeds will stay with their puppies for up to 12 weeks, 8 weeks is the typical timeframe for puppies to stay by their mother’s side. At this point, they’ll have learned important life lessons needed to survive, and the mother’s maternal instincts will have slowly gone away.
Is It Cruel To Take Puppies Away From Their Mother?
While you may automatically assume it’s cruel at first glance, the answer is actually pretty complex!
It would definitely be cruel to take all the puppies away from their mum at once.
This is why the process is done gradually so that the mother doesn’t have to grieve too much.
Despite this, she’ll still look for her pups for several days.
But this isn’t cruel, it’s part of nature! Pups tend to leave their mothers after a set period of time, and keeping them together would only cause problems!
Since puppies rely on their mother in so many ways, they obviously do feel a little upset when they leave. But if they’re properly socialized, they should settle into their new home before reaching 12 weeks of age!
