Before James West went on secret missions for President Grant, Yancy Derringer was going on secret missions for the City Administrator of New Orleans. A Reconstruction-era gambler and adventurer, Yancy lived at the family plantation (actually Tara from 'Gone With the Wind') and owned a riverboat (the Sultana - some of her footage was re-used in 'Wild, Wild West'). 'Yancy Derringer' (1958) lasted one season; Johnson's Wax was ready to do a another but CBS wanted part ownership of the show and the producers demurred. For its CBS showings the theme song was 'Ballad of Yancy Derringer' by Henry Russell and Don Quinn; the latter had a long career as writer for radio's 'Fibber McGee and Molly', also sponsored by Johnson's Wax. When 'Yancy' went into syndication the 'Ballad' was replaced with a recycled instrumental called 'Four Seasons' (Herschel Burke Gilbert and Sidney Keith Russell). Odds are Johnson's Wax and/or the composers had a piece of the song and would have been entitled to royalties had it not been replaced.
0:00 CBS opening titles, bumper, and end credits.
1:43 Syndicated opening titles and end credits. The music editing for the credits is clumsy; in 60 seconds there are three bad edits that break the simple 1-2-3 rhythm.
