Many new cars come equipped with heavily interactive dashboard systems, known as “infotainment” that allow drivers to obtain directions, tune the radio, and send/answer text messages while on the road.
Since distracted driving continues to be a serious problem and results in many fatal accidents, studies were conducted to test exactly how distracted drivers were.
120 drivers between the ages of 21-36 drove 30 vehicles from the year 2017, all equipped with new infotainment systems to test their cognitive and visual levels of distraction when in use.
Keying in directions can take up to 40 seconds of a drivers’ attention on the road. Traveling at 25 mph, this means a driver could cross the length of 4 football fields without their full attention on the road.
Vehicles fell into three categories: very high , high, and moderate distraction. None of the 30 vehicles were ranked into the “low” category.
According to Ohio car accident attorney Mike Christensen, drivers should make sure to program their dashboard systems before getting on any road or highway.
