Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited southwestern China's Sichuan Province, sending new year greetings to people all over the country. The week-long Lunar New Year holiday, which starts on Thursday, is the most important in the Chinese calendar. It's a time when millions of families get together and make wishes for the future.
Xi's Sichuan tour across several autonomous regions in the province has sent a strong signal about the leadership's signature poverty alleviation policy. This region has some of the largest minority populations in China. 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the deadly Wenchuan magnitude-8 earthquake and President Xi went the affected area to mourn the victims and pay tribute to heroes who lost their lives in the rescue.
