Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor And Father of Marie Antoinette: Francis Stephen of Lorraine was born on 8 December 1708 in Nancy and died on 18 August 1765 in Innsbruck. He was Duke of Lorraine and Bar from 1729 to 1736 as Francis Stephen III, then from 1737 he was Francis Stephen II Grand Duke of Tuscany and in 1745 he became Francis Stephen I Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1736 Francis Stephen Stephan married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, the only heiress of Emperor Charles VI, and together with her he founded the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. From 1740 he was her co-regent in the Habsburg Hereditary Lands, but he was hardly involved in the affairs of government. He therefore devoted himself to successful financial transactions and the promotion of the sciences.
