Subscribe here: [ Ссылка ] NATO and the EU agreed to create a taskforce on resilience and critical infrastructure protection, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday (11 January 2023) in Brussels.
They were speaking ahead of discussions on security and defence at a retreat of the College of European Commissioners, where Mr Stoltenberg was the first NATO Secretary General to take part. He stressed that resilience and the protection of critical infrastructure are a key part of the joint work between NATO and the EU. He said that, in the wake of President Putin’s weaponising of energy and the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, the focus of the joint taskforce will be on making “our critical infrastructure, technology and supply chains more resilient to potential threats and to take action to mitigate potential vulnerabilities.”
The meeting took place one day after the signature of the third Joint Declaration on NATO-EU cooperation. The Secretary General said this partnership is more important than ever, because Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally changed our security. He stressed that the fierce fighting around Bakhmut and Soledar showed the bravery of Ukrainian forces and the vital importance of stepping up military support to Ukraine. “At this key juncture in the war, we must do even more, even faster,” he said.
Joint task force with NATO for the defense of critical infrastructures!
"The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline has shown that we must be ready and that we must face this new type of threat"
The European Union and NATO have decided to create a task force to protect infrastructures defined as critically important. This was announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a press point in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "Today we are launching the EU-NATO task force for the resilience of critical infrastructures", said von der Leyen. “The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline showed that we must be ready and that we must face this new type of threat,” he continued. “This is a task force in which experts from NATO and the European Union will work hand in hand to identify the main threats to our critical infrastructure, to examine the strategic vulnerabilities we have and to develop key principles to improve our resilience and to propose mitigation measures and corrective actions,” he added. The task force, explained von der Leyen, will initially deal with 4 sectors: transport, energy, digital and space. “We will report our findings to member states and allies. It is about sharing information, sharing good practices and, of course, sharing early warning and expertise,” concluded von der Leyen.
The resilience and protection of critical infrastructures are a fundamental part of the joint efforts between NATO and the EU, "for this reason we have decided to create a task force" NATO-EU on the resilience of critical infrastructures. This was stated by the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg. Underlining the importance of the task force, Stoltenberg recalled the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline and Putin's use of energy as a weapon as examples of threats that European states must face. With the task force, explained the NATO secretary general, "we will act together, to understand how to make our critical infrastructures, technology and supply chains more resistant to potential threats, and to take actions aimed at mitigating potential vulnerabilities". A step that will make "our societies stronger and safer", concluded Stoltenberg.
