Zoonoses are infections that are transmitted from animals to humans. Non-food borne zoonotic diseases, which include avian flu and Q fever, can be transmitted from an infected animal to a human or another animal by other organisms -- such as mosquitoes, ticks, flies, fleas and lice -- or through direct contact or close proximity with infected animals. How can EU citizens be protected from these diseases? A veterinarian who works at the European Food Safety Authority explains.
