If you want to attend nursing schools in New York you should understand that there are three different and distinct nursing licenses recognized in the nursing profession in the state of New York. These are;
• Registered Professional Nurse,
• Licensed Practical Nurse and
• Nurse Practitioner.
Each of these different nursing licenses will allow nurses to undertake different duties;
A Registered Professional Nurse (RN) is allowed to diagnose and treat each patient's individual response to the health problems they have been diagnosed with. They can also perform health assessments to identify any new possibly undiagnosed symptoms, conditions or complications. They need to carry out the medical directions as prescribed by licensed physicians and authoritive figures such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and podiatrists. They are allowed to teach patients the finer points of health maintenance and are encouraged to preach ways prevention of illness that are approved by employers. They are expected to contribute to the team of consultants and health related committees. This contributes to the health plan and health care needs of patients.
A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works under the supervision of an RN, physician, or any other authorized health care provider. A LPN provides skilled nursing care to patients carrying out medical tasks and procedures
A LPN provides nursing care under the direction of an RN, physician, or other authorized health care provider. There is no independent component to the LPN role. An LPN will generally have graduated from high school and completed an approved practical nursing program. This will generally have taken at least nine months or two semesters.
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse who has gained a totally separate license. They are licensed as a nurse practitioner by having done additional study gaining specialist experience in a specific area of nursing. Nurse practitioners are allowed to diagnose and treat a patient including prescribing for conditions that fall within their specialist area of qualifications.
This has to be done under the supervision of a licensed physician. This licensed physician must also be qualified in the specialist area the nurse is trained in and must follow an approved practice agreement and written protocols. However Nurse Practitioners are also given autonomy and do not have to practice under the direct supervision of the collaborating physician.
