The Theater of the Asclepieion of Epidaurus was built by Polykleitos around 340-330 BC. It is the most perfect and famous ancient Greek Theater, because it combines elegance and perfect acoustics.
The monument was built to show musical, and dramatic performances and plays related to the cult of Asclepius.
In the middle of the 2nd c. BC, its concave was expanded and its capacity from about 8,000 increased to 14,000 spectators.
At the same time, the stage building was designed so that the actors could play exclusively in the stage, that is above the foreground.
The hollow of the Theater has been constructed on the slope of the hill with limestone material.
The hollow of the theater is divided into two unequal parts by a horizontal corridor for the movement of the spectators 1.90m wide, the molding, which is similar in the upper part of the theater.
The lower concave or theater consisted of 34 rows of seats, for priests and lords, and the upper theater or theater with 21 rows of seats for the people.
Monumental two-door gates were built in the corridors, from which sloping levels (terraces) led to the foreground.
A paved corridor separates the concave from the circular orchestra that has a diameter of 20 m., In the center of which the base for the altar of Dionysus (thyme) is preserved.
The stage building came to light in ruins. It consists of the foreground and a two-storey stage, framed with backstage.
Initially it had two colonnades with pillars, one on the front of the foreground, decorated with Ionic half-columns and the other on the back of the ground floor hall of the stage.
The movable paintings moved from the foreground to the floor, which were placed between pillars to shape the scene according to the drama being played.
At the top of the stage was the mechanism that was used for the appearance of flying heroes or gods, which is why the term "by machine god" is known.
They were large mechanisms made of beams, pulleys and ropes that could lift loads up to a ton and in some cases make heavy shocks adding a dramatic element to the work.
At the level of the stage was a hatch with internal stairs from which gods and dead heroes came out representing the ascent from the underworld. This mechanism was called the charon's scale.
The monument was brought to light by the excavations of Panagi Kavvadias in the years 1881-83.
Since 1988 the maintenance of the Theater was undertaken by the Committee for the Preservation of Epidaurus.
Since 1954, ancient drama performances have been taking place in their natural space every summer
