This is a great chord shape to know. With it's light, pleasant airy sound you will here it in many exotic of fantastic style spacey songs. Think Space Oddity by David Bowie, there is two in that song! It can be exchanged for the I and IV chord of a major progression for your own writing but you will run across the Fmaj7 a lot in the key of C as well.
