A lot of times, patients will come into the office – I had one the other day. She came in and she goes, “You know, doctor, my dentures just really aren't staying in like they used to.” I said, “Okay.” I go, “How old are your dentures?” She said, “Well, you know, I had dentures made about eight, nine, ten years ago.”
A lot of times, people get dentures made and they think, alright, I'm good to go. I don't need any other future work done. I don't need to go and see the dentist ever again. Unfortunately, the tissues change and the bone levels change over time, so the mold that the denture was made from doesn't last forever. It's like anything in life; nothing really lasts forever, but if we take care of things and see the dentist regularly, a lot of times things can be maintained.
When dentures start to become loose, they're not staying in as well, a lot of times, if the teeth aren't worn down too badly, we can do what we call a denture realign and make them fit a little bit better. If when you come in for your recall exam and we look at the dentures, we look at the teeth, and we think they're so worn out you might need to replace them, I usually say as a rule of thumb – and again, everybody's different. Some people wear things out faster than others. It depends on a multitude of different factors. I would say, average rule of thumb, every seven to eight years, a new denture usually is fabricated.
