Thickening and calcification of parts of the posterior longitudinal ligament can occur, converting them from thin, flexible ligaments to thickened, bony masses. This disease is called ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, or OPLL. It leads to compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots next to the ligament.
Symptoms include neck, arm or leg pain, numbness or weakness. Symptoms usually gradually worsen, but can commence suddenly. The average age of onset is around fifty years old.
TREATMENT
Conservative treatments are usually ineffective.
The disease often progresses even after surgical treatment.
