In Tanzania, nearly 40% of fish, including Dagaa—an essential source of nutrition—is lost before reaching consumers. With over 200,000 fishers working across the Indian Ocean and the country's lakes, Tanzania’s fishing industry plays a vital role in the nation’s economy and food security. Small-scale fisheries are especially crucial, providing affordable nutrition to 72% of the population. However, challenges such as inadequate transportation and storage result in significant fish waste.
Through the Asia–Africa BlueTech Superhighway initiative, in collaboration with the FAO, local partner TAFIRI, and the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is taking action to address these issues. The initiative promotes sustainable practices, empowers fishing communities, and reduces food loss to build a more resilient and sustainable future for the fishing sector.
