To address the growing demand for mobile data in the US, in early 2017 the FCC concluded an auction of some of the UHF TV band spectrum. Many wireless microphones and personal monitor systems operate in the UHF band and share this spectrum with DTV stations and other wireless devices.
After a 39-month transition period, the UHF TV band will extend from 470 MHz to 614 MHz. The rest – known as the 600 MHz band – will mostly be used by mobile data providers.
During the transition period, TV stations will begin moving to their new channel assignments. Mobile data providers will commence operations gradually on a city-by-city basis.
As soon as a mobile data provider begins using the 600 MHz band in your city, you must change frequencies to avoid interfering with them.
At the end of the transition period, use of wireless microphones and personal monitor systems that can transmit on frequencies between 616 and 653 MHz or between 663 and 698 MHz will be prohibited by law, and must be retired from service.
