Following last season's elimination in the group stages, hopes had been high for Roberto Mancini's Manchester City this time around as they entered this season's Champions League as Premier League winners.
However, a challenging group left City needing victory against Real Madrid on Wednesday night to keep their slim qualification hopes alive. That task wasn't made any easier when Karim Benzema put Real ahead after 10 minutes.
A brief glimmer of hope came from Sergio Aguero's penalty kick - but the 1-1 draw at the Etihad confirmed a second consecutive early exit from football's premier competition.
It doesn't get any easier for Mancini's men. They must beat Group D leaders Borussia Dortmund - and hope Ajax lose - if they are to pick up a consolation place in Europa League.
