In response to the challenges presented by COVID-19, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is reaching out to nursing homes and nursing schools in the United States to share our experience in epidemic response and infection prevention and control (IPC). From the start of the pandemic, MSF teams have worked with hundreds of long-term care facilities across Europe, as well as in Michigan and Texas. In this video, we introduce an adaptable training module available for nursing schools to integrate into their curricula. “Nursing schools are uniquely positioned to provide IPC expertise that can make a tremendous difference in their communities,” says Buffy Lloyd-Krejci, DrPH, who has worked with MSF as an infection prevention and control manager. The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on people living in nursing homes and long-term care centers, and on essential workers in these facilities. In the US, nearly 40 percent of coronavirus deaths have been linked to long-term care facilities—even though they accounted for only 7 percent of the total cases, according to an analysis by The New York Times. While the elderly and immunocompromised are particularly vulnerable to the virus, many long-term care facilities lack adequate training and support for staff on IPC.
