Ukraine's attack on Belgorod killed 5 civilians and wounded 13 others.
In Russia's counter-attack, journalists were targeted in an attack on a hotel in Kramatorsk. While the mutual attacks hit civilians, the clashes are getting more intense.
Mutual attacks continue to increase in the Russia-Ukraine war. While there were casualties in Ukraine's attack on Belgorod, journalists were targeted in Russia's attack on a hotel in Kramatorsk.
Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced on Telegram that 5 people lost their lives and 13 people were injured in Ukraine's attack on Rakitnoye settlement. Stating that 3 children were among the wounded, Gladkov said, “We will definitely help everyone who has suffered damage. Our task at the moment is to endure, to overcome the tests, to overcome the problems.”
Following Ukraine's surprise ground offensive in Russia's Kursk region two weeks ago, attacks on Russian territory have increased. In mid-August, Gladkov declared a state of emergency in the region due to Ukrainian shelling. In response, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it was sending more troops to defend the Kursk region. On Sunday, the ministry announced that it had sent more artillery units to Kursk to help troops push back Ukrainian forces.
Russia retaliated. Journalists were targeted in the hotel attack.
On the Ukrainian front, the governor of the Donetsk region, Vadym Filashkin, said on Sunday that a hotel in Kramatorsk had been hit in an overnight Russian attack. Two journalists were wounded in the attack and a third journalist was missing, Filashkin said, adding that the journalists were British, American and Ukrainian citizens and that search efforts were ongoing.
Reuters news agency confirmed that his team of 6 journalists were staying at the Sapphire Hotel that was hit. “One of our colleagues is missing, the other two have been hospitalized for treatment. We have been informed about the condition of the other three colleagues. We are urgently seeking more information, working with the authorities in Kramatorsk and supporting our colleagues and their families.”
The strikes also targeted civilian infrastructure. The city's natural gas pipeline was hit.
At the same time, Russia launched several missile and drone strikes overnight on northern and eastern regions of Ukraine, including Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk frontline regions. The Ukrainian military claimed that the country's air defense systems had destroyed “most of the missiles” but did not provide exact numbers.
Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv city, announced that a gas pipeline was damaged, at least two houses were destroyed and 10 houses were damaged in the Russian attacks. Governor of Kharkiv region Oleh Sinehubov announced that 7 people, including a 4-year-old child, were injured in the Russian attacks.
