Hiking Valley of Fire State Park

Swifty Travels has finally made it to the Valley of Fire State Park! I have wanted to hike valley of fire state park for many, many years! This year, while visiting the area for Thanksgiving with visited Valley of Fire for a 1/2 day.

After learning a little history of the area at the Valley of Fire Visitor Center, we make our way through the glorious Vally of Fire scenic drive to hike the two best hikes at Valley of Fire. We hiked the Fire Wave Trail and the White Dome Trail. Both trails are short in length, with stunning views. There were a few unanticipated challenges on these hikes, but they are worth it!

Valley of Fire State park is considered Nevada’s First State park officially designated in 1935 and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Valley of Fire is situated on what used to be known as the old arrowhead trail- which was a rough road built through this area in 1912 connecting Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.

The park is open sunrise to sunset and costs $10 per car for residents and $15 for non-residents. Most of the sites are right off the main road. Keep in mind that starting in 2023, timed reservations will be required to enter the park.

The Fire Wave Trail is 1.5 miles total in length out and back. This trail is closed in the summer. The White Dome Loop is 1.1 miles and has the most varied terrain, but we were quite surprised to encounter the steep hill down early on the trail. Other than that, the trail was relatively easy, but some areas are pretty thick sand. At the back of this loop is a beautiful slot canyon that is not to be missed.
