I see it all the time! CPAP consultant sits the patient down and asks if they breathe through their mouth or nose. The patient says mouth, consultant hands them a full face mask, slaps them on the ass and says good luck. WRONG!
Nearly every single apnea patient breathes through their mouth and that's because they have sleep apnea!!! Once you treat sleep apnea, 90% can revert to breathing through their nose and using a nasal-style mask with just a little practice. The only people who can't are the ones with structural problems like deviated septums, nasal polyps, sinusitis etc. With these types of patients, a full face mask is normally required.
Personally, i start every single person on a nasal-style mask for the first 2-4 weeks of therapy and only change to a full-style mask if it's absolutely necessary and there's just no way for the patient to use the nasal interface.
