In this video I show you how to calculate the customs duty and VAT on imports from China to the UK. My first Amazon FBA import has just cleared customs so I have paperwork from my freight forwarder showing exactly how the customs duty and VAT are calculated.

Later in the video I also look at how to register for an EORI number and how to find your HMRC customs duty classification code.

Here is a summary of the calculations shown on the freight forwarder invoice for calculating customs duty and VAT.

1) Take the order cost in the original currency e.g. $4475

2) Convert it to GBP by dividing by exchange rate (currently $1.2909 to £1) - $4475 / 1.2909 = £3466.57

3) Add shipping cost (inc. insurance cost) £312.44 (Total = £3779.01)

4) Calculate Customs Duty e.g. for 6.3% multiply by 0.063 = £238.08 (Total = £4017.07)

5) Calculate VAT on Total, multiply by 0.20 = £803.41

6) Customs Duty £238.08 + VAT £803.41 = Grand Total £1041.49
