Ballard, MD, MSPH, PhD, FACP, CMM, chief quality officer for Baylor Scott & White Health and president of the STEEEP Global Institute, is the book's author.
"Receipt of the Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award signifies the authors' contribution to the body of knowledge surrounding operational excellence," says Robert Miller, executive director of the Shingo Institute. "The intent is to motivate others to learn from them."
In his book, Ballard offers strategies and lessons in the areas of people, culture and processes that have contributed to the improvements in patient and operational outcomes at Baylor. STEEEP® is an acronym trademarked by Baylor to communicate the six "aims" for improvement set forth by the Institute of Medicine based on the core need for health care to be safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient centered.
"'Achieving STEEEP Health Care' is a compelling and comprehensive book on improving quality," says Troyen A. Brennan, MD and executive vice president and chief medical officer at CVS Caremark. "Baylor Health Care System's commitment to better health care is unmatched, and in David Ballard they found a person who can not only lead change, but also capture and characterize the key insights that will help the rest of us get on the path to superb care."
By "challenging" or applying for an award, authors invite a group of accomplished professionals and trained examiners from the Shingo Institute to thoroughly review their publications. The examiners select recipients based on a rigorous set of standards.
Ballard will receive the award during the the 26th Shingo International Conference held in Sandusky, Ohio the week of May 5-9, 2014.
