A quick demonstration on how to skip past Marowak's Ghost in Lavender Town's Pokemon Tower, without the need of the Silph Scope. Also known as the Poke Doll Glitch, all you need, is a simple Poke Doll, found on the fourth floor of the Poke Mart in Celedon City. It's a well known glitch to speed-runners of the game, which eliminates the need to navigate the Team Rocket hideout in order to get the Silph Scope normally required to I.D. and battle Marowak's Ghost.

A Poke Doll - for those who don't know - is an item used to flee wild encounters in an instant. This is useful when the wild Pokemon is much faster, where fleeing would be very difficult otherwise. The only way to get past Marowak's Ghost is to end the battle. As you cannot identify it without the Silph Scope, the only option is the Poke Doll. Even a Master Ball will fail to catch it. However, by fleeing the battle in this manner, the game acts in the same way as fleeing a Legendary Pokemon encounter. Meaning, it will never return, and you can continue on to Mr Fuji, without the Silph Scope, which is essentially a one-off item for this area, and will be dumped away in your PC.
Interestingly enough, although you can't identify wild Gastly's with the Silph Scope, it is not needed when battling the Channeler's in Pokemon Tower. The game acts as if you automatically have the Silph Scope, and can battle them as normal. You won't be able to catch a ghost without the Silph Scope, but it's somewhat amusing to bring your maxed-out Mewtwo to Pokemon Tower and watch as it becomes "...too scared to move"!
