What’s Inside AWACS Spy Plane?
This is the E-3 707 airborne warning and control system (AWACS). It is built by the Boeing Defense and the Space Group. The first E-3 entered service in March 1977 with the US Air Force. There are a total of 33 aircraft in service with the United States Air Force.
AWACS units are used to carry out surveillance & command, control, and communications functions for tactical and air defense forces.
The main function of the E-3 is to detect, identify, track and intercept airborne threats.
The E3 has a Northrop Grumman M.E.S.A or “MESA” electronically scanned array radar with a 360° view of the horizon and has a range of more than 320 km.
There is equipment arranged in bays for communications, signal and data processing, command and control consoles, navigation and target identification systems.
The plane is 46.62 m long, 12.5 m wide and has a wingspan of 44.43 m and powered by four Pratt and Whitney TF 33 PW 100/100A turbofans that produce 21,500 lb of thrust each.
