Fort Saint-Jean in Marseille was built approximately in the 17th century on a site earlier occupied by the Military Order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John. High walls made of light yellow stone mined from nearby coastal quarries. Small courtyard with a well and a bell tower, passages, galleries on the outer walls, several gardens. All this fits into a relatively small but capacious fort.
From the walls, you can see Old Port and beautiful cityscape of Marseille, some landmarks such as Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde, Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, Fort Saint-Nicolas, Pharo Palace.
