The European Space Agency's JUICE spacecraft, short for Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, has made a groundbreaking maneuver, slingshotting past Earth and the moon as it embarks on its epic journey to Jupiter. Launched on April 14, 2023, JUICE is on a complex trajectory, now en route to Venus for another flyby before heading back to Earth in 2026 and 2029 for additional gravity assists. These critical maneuvers will set JUICE on its final course to Jupiter, where it’s scheduled to arrive in July 2031.
JUICE's recent flyby, described as flawless by Spacecraft Operations Manager Ignacio Tanco, brought it within just 4,250 miles (6,840 kilometers) of Earth, allowing it to capture stunning images of our planet. This close approach also served to slow the spacecraft by over 10,000 mph, redirecting it toward Venus with incredible precision.
