South Korea, the home of beautiful cherry blossom, huge technologically advanced cities and... a grand prix?
Yeah I know, what a disaster right? Well yes, last time out, f1 failed miserably in the country due to a mix of financial, infrastructural, and operational dificulties so why on earth am I about to tell you that actually the re-entry of formula one back into south korea is a great idea for the sport, fans and teams alike?
Well firstly from an economic point of view, formula one really should be looking at growing in one of the only parts of Asia in which it does not hold a strong foothold. In the years since the last korean grand prix in 2013, the South Korean economy has seen strong growth with GDP per capita growing by 30% in this time period, hence Formula One will be able to charge higher ticket prices and make this a very lucrative expansion for the group which we all know is one of the main reasons for an enterance into a new market for the folks over at f1.
Whats more as was an issue last time round, infrastructure projects like the overhall of the nations transportation system have made south korea one of the best connected countries in the world. A commonly cited issue for the failure of the korean grand prix was a lack of places to stay for team members and fans, so its clear to me that a change in location could seriously aide in the success of this event.
So it makes business sence, but why on earth would this work for the fan base of F1? Well, The motorsport appetite in this region has significantly grown in recent years, as seen by Seoul City Government hosting a Formula E Prix in 2022. This cultural shift not only makes it more commercially viable for F1, but also holds great importance for F1's future in terms of soft power in this region. It diversifies the sports influence, reducing reliance on China amidst rising geopolitical tensions between Western countries and China. Whats more the post-pandemic car culture in South Korea has been growing, evident from the formation of numerous online car clubs.
Ok I hear you say, they should be able to get fans through the gates but why do F1 need south korea? Well its simple, it just makes sence. How on earth have the most technologically dialled in nation on earth not embraced our great sport. From a personal point of view too, I would like to think that the likes of Hyundai and Kia, two massive car brands from the region might want to step into the sport off of the back of domestic support.
So where would I put it?
Here. This is the Inje Speedium, and is currently an FIA grade 2 circuit and personally I think this place looks just perfect for formula one. It has elevation changes, it has grandstands, and oh my lord look at those views.
Just imagine, the lights go out, 19 of the best drivers in the world and logan sargeant all go roaring into turn one with that absolutely beautiful mountain in the background.
This circuit has it all. More inclination changes than a roller coaster, some nerve rattlig high speed turns and some slow to medium speed ones too. It seriously reminds me of mugello and brazil.
Now my only gripe with this circuit is that it does look like in the modern era of formula one cars, it could be a bit tight but regardless, f1 is in dire need for some purpose built non street circuits, so why not have it here?
