In this video, I'm showcasing/sharing how to upgrade my ROG ALLY (Z1 Extreme) SSD using a 2TB Sabrent Rocket (2230). I got a faulty micro-SD card slot, but I didn’t RMA my ALLY, instead, I decided to upgrade the SSD as I think it’s much better to run the heavyweight AAA games from the SSD than the micro-SD card. This 2TB Gen4 Sabrent Rocket 2230 NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD has 5000Mb/s read/write speed, which is faster than Micron (3500-4000Mb/s read/write speed) that comes default on the ALLY. I got it from Amazon for $200 during discount (from $250).
Upgrade steps:
• Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver (to untie the screws)
• Use a soft cushioning/padding (a piece of stereo foam/cloth) when you turn/flip your ALLY to avoid damaging the screen or the analogue sticks
• Untie the 6 screws on the backplate of the ALLY
• Using a guitar pick/prying tool, start separating the backplate behind the shoulder triggers, continue gently until you hear the snapping sound and the whole backplate comes off/out
• At your own discretion, you can keep or remove the battery cord (if you don’t create a hazard)
• Gently remove the black film (partially) so you can untie the M.2 SSD screw, after untying the screw, try gently to unplug the M.2 SSD (you can use a prying tool if you need)
• Plug the new M.2 SSD (2TB Sabrent Rocket) carefully into the slot, tie the screw
• Put back the backplate and tie the 6 screws
• Connect your ALLY to a power supply and switch on, it will boot up into the bios, to start the cloud recovery process, go into ‘Advanced’, click on ‘ASUS Cloud Recovery’
• Follow the on-screen steps/messages, your ALLY will start the cloud recovery process and will reboot/restart many times (this might take a while), so don’t worry about this
• When the cloud recovery is done, the ALLY will boot in Windows, and you can configure the Windows settings as you configure any other X86 Windows device
