Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is the second-largest city of the German state of Bavaria after its capital Munich, and its 541,000 inhabitants make it the 14th-largest city in Germany.
Nuremberg is first mentioned in 1050, as the location of an Imperial castle. From 1050 to 1572 the city expanded and rose dramatically in importance due to its location on key trade-routes.
The largest growth of Nuremberg occurred in the 14th century. Nuremberg was the city where newly elected kings of Germany had to hold their first Imperial Diet, making Nuremberg (and particularly Nuremberg Castle) one of the three most important cities of the Empire. The cultural flowering of Nuremberg in the 15th and 16th centuries made it the center of the German Renaissance. Albrecht Dürer lived and worked here. In 1525 Nuremberg accepted the Protestant Reformation, and at the 1555 Peace of Augsburg, the possessions of the Protestants were confirmed. During the Thirty Years War, the city declined and recovered its importance only in the 19th century, when it grew as an industrial center. After the Austro-Prussian War Nuremberg became part of a unified Germany. On 2 January 1945, the medieval city center was systematically bombed by the allied air forces and about ninety percent of it was destroyed in only one hour. Despite this intense degree of destruction, the city was rebuilt after the war, including the reconstruction of its medieval buildings.
Nuremberg is still an important industrial center with a strong standing in the markets of Central and Eastern Europe. There are many institutions of higher education in the city, including the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany's 11th-largest university.
