On September 4, 2021, just outside Istanbul, Turkey, Italian pilot Dario Costa would attempt to write a new chapter in the record books by flying his race plane at 245kph through two tunnels, in total more than 2,000m. If he could pull it off, the flight would inspire the world and define his career as an aerobatic pilot.
But his chances for success were only theoretical. No one had ever flown a plane in a tunnel before.
And there was no way to fly a trial run.
This is the story of how a man who values effort above talent managed to soar from a modest upbringing to the heights of aviation achievement. How a former swimming-pool cleaner who had worked his way to Red Bull Air Race gold envisioned a flying project so audacious and complex that it was more than a year in the making. How he trained daily with a team of experts and engineers to hone his skills and develop a simulator that he would run again and again – thousands of times – until he could visualise every detail of the tight, dim tunnels.
And this is what it was like, moment by moment, when Dario Costa climbed into the cockpit and flew his way into history.
